The Bassa Kingdom (Native Authority East of Lokoja)

what emerged after the fall of Bassa province was a new kingdom-the Bassa Native Authority with five progressive districts (clan areas) under Omaga became an established case of conquest which gave birth to Bassa kingdom and consequently, Bassa-komo Native Authority with a paramount chieftaincy position of 4th class rank gazette in 1929” (15) one Tamazhi Kekure ( a colonialist’s messenger and interpreter) became the first paramount ruler of the kingdom.

The Bassa kingdom (Native Authority) lost its status as it was merged with the Igala Native Authority in 1960 through foul play in a purported reorganization of Native authorities in the North. Today, Bassa local autonomy has re-emerged in a new face (the Bassa Local Government Areas) in 1976, (16)0 now comprising of the Bassa, Mozum and Gbokolo Districts of the then Igala Native Authority. The Bassa now share authority and boundary with the Nupe emigrants (j.e Bassa-Nge). “The Bassa-komu was said to have crossed the River Benue to the area about 1830,s” while the Bassa Nge crossed at the confluence in the 1850,s” (17) over twenty years later. From the 4th class chieftaincy position in 1929, the Bassa chieftaincy rank has risen to a 1st class status.
